Discover the fascinating story behind Hotel Nieto in Mompox! In 1922, Roberto Nieto Ricaurte acquired this house for 1,700 Colombian pesos, a considerable sum at the time. Despite being born into poverty and facing the stigma of not having a recognized father, Roberto, through his hard work on banana plantations, became one of the most successful businessmen in the region.
Together with his wife Josefina, of Italian descent, they raised seven children, many of whom left town to pursue their education. However, the arrival of truck transport in the 1960s brought a decline in river trade on the Magdalena, impacting the local economy and the family business.
In 2012, Roberto's grandson, Martín Nieto, who had never met his grandfather, visited Mompox and was struck by the desolate state of the family home. He decided to restore it and transform it into the charming Hotel Nieto, preserving the history and legacy of his family so that other travelers could enjoy this unique experience.
In this same house, José Ignacio Nieto Simanca was born, Colombia's first mathematics PhD, in 1956, adding a fascinating chapter to its history.
